NBA 2K20 has successfully done well in the NBA 2k series, but this does not prevent us from looking forward to NBA 2k21. Here are our early predictions for NBA 2k21, including release dates, cover stars, and changes, and more.

When is the NBA 2K21 release date on Xbox One and PS4?

The exciting part about the NBA 2K21 launch this year is going to be the staggered nature of when people will be playing it. But exactly when is the question. Let’s use recent history to make an educated guess: The NBA 2K franchise has long been a September release, and the last four iterations have been creeping earlier and earlier in the month. NBA 2K20 dropped on Sept. 6, and it’s hard to see the trend reversing, so let’s stake out the first Friday in September and say that Sept. 4, 2020 is a mighty fine guess for an NBA 2K21 release date.

Who will feature on the cover of NBA 2K21?

Who will be the star of next years cover? Will we see more than one player feature on the cover for the first time since 2K16?

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo

Giannis Antetokounmpo is very best that the NBA currently has to offer. The reigning NBA MVP has spent all of his career to date with the Bucks and has quickly become a fan favorite. He is the reigning MVP and hot favorite to make it back-to-back awards this year, his marketability continues to grow due to his ever-increasing popularity. Giannis dropped 50 points, 14 rebounds and six assists in the 122–118 win over the Utah Jazz. His ability to get to the line (97 rated draw foul) means you’ll get plenty of and ones with this card, his 82 rated free-throw means you’ll make plenty of them.

Also, Giannis is eligible to sign a super-max contract in the summer and if he does — and he is expected too — then it makes sense to see the Freak back on the cover in 2K21.

  • Kevin Durant

He may not play for Brooklyn until next season, but that doesn’t stop Kevin Durant from being small forwards the Nets have to offer in 2K20.

The Nets picked up Kevin Durant from the Warriors on a four-year contract, worth an estimated $164 million, somewhat of a gamble given Durant’s recent injury troubles. The chances of Durant taking to the court this campaign are little to zero, with the Nets hoping that the 2014 MVP can recapture his old form from next season onwards. A 90-rated base card makes Durant the joint highest default small forward in the game. Durant is a ball-dominant player as indicated by his 99 rating in the touches tendency.

Whilst KD and the Warriors may have failed with their quest for an elusive ‘three-peat’ last year, the Brooklyn Net’s man could make it a third NBA 2K cover appearance in 2K21, having featured on the covers of both 2K15 and 2K17.

The 31-year-old made the switch from California to NYC when he swapped the Warriors for the Nets in the offseason and whilst he wouldn’t be a new signing per se, KD will be raring to go next season, as it is unlikely he will have played for the Nets due to his ongoing injury problems.

  • Kawhi Leonard

Last year’s NBA Finals MVP made the decision to switch Canada for America in the offseason as he joined the Los Angeles Clippers, who are still in search of their first NBA crown.

With everything that Kawhi Leonard has accomplished in his NBA career, and all the applause he has received. With 33 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against the Miami Heat, he accomplished the feat, but his response was unapologetically professional. In true Mamba Mentality, he was all about his game, improving, and getting a W for his team.

Whilst the season so far may have not lived up to the hype that surrounded them coming into it, we all know what Kawhi is capable of when the playoffs arrive and, with Paul George and co alongside him, he could well be set for a second consecutive ring.

Should that happen, and should Kawhi be the man to guide them there, then he’s sure to be hot property for both 2K Sports and EA Sports when they come looking for a cover star.

What might be the Changes introduced in NBA 2K21?

According to the most recent speculation, NBA 2K21 will introduce major graphical changes and overall improvements in its gameplay and overall balance to be ready for the upcoming next-gen consoles. It has already been revealed, that both Sony PS5 and Xbox Series X will feature some serious hardware up-gradation with some never-seen-before changes to stay true to its next-gen console label, and rumors say that NBA 2K21 will come with ray-tracing support which will provide some serious improvements to its lighting, shadows and overall in-game visuals.

The career mode might also see some improvements in terms of story progression and micro-transactions. Apart from these, support for cross-play will act as a big boon for the game as it will allow gamers from different consoles to connect and play together, and it will take the game to a whole new level.
